The Phoenix Suns are banking on Miles Bridges to address a clear roster need as they aim to move past a first-round playoff loss. The team acquired the versatile forward in a significant offseason trade, hoping his skillset can change their fortunes. Bridges is set for his preseason debut on October 5 against the Detroit Pistons in his home state of Michigan.
Bridges has spent time studying film to see where he fits. He believes his style will mesh instantly. "I feel like my physicality is going to really help us because we’re already a physical team with Dillon (Brooks) and everybody else," Bridges said. "Just a scrappy team, and I think I can add to that." His new teammates are already excited about the potential impact.
Devin Booker pointed directly to what was missing last season. "He's something that we were lacking a bit last year with his size, his versatility on both ends of the court," the Suns All-Star said. Booker also praised Bridges as an underrated playmaker who can grab rebounds and push the tempo. He noted Bridges' ability to exploit smaller defenders in mismatches, a valuable weapon in the NBA.
The trade required a substantial outlay from Phoenix's front office. The Suns sent Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale, and an unprotected 2033 first-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets. In return, they received Bridges, a 2029 first-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick. It's a move that signals a win-now mentality for the franchise.
Team owner Mat Ishbia expressed strong approval for the deal. "I feel great about the Miles Bridges trade," Ishbia said. He acknowledged the contributions of the departing players while focusing on the upgrade Bridges represents. The 28-year-old forward stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 225 pounds, providing the size and strength Booker mentioned.
Bridges is entering the final year of a three-year, $75 million contract. He is eligible for a three-year extension worth up to $86 million. His immediate focus is on integrating with stars like Booker and building chemistry during the preseason. His first chance comes in Detroit, a fitting location for the Flint, Michigan native.
Bridges aims to be part of the solution as Phoenix looks ahead to a new campaign. Fans can track the team's progress and upcoming schedule on our schedule page.
